Daily inspiration

Illustration for the nation

My one and only love, Ms. Fashion....have you met my newly found friend Ms. illustration? She's a beauty! I think you would both get along very well...

For you lovely people today I am going to introduce you to some of the biggest and most admirable fashion illustrators in the world.Their work is just so fascinating and has really inspired me whilst studying fashion at Central St. Martins.

What I really find interesting is how they have the power to bring any image alive, to bring together two of my dearest gal pals with such splendour and creativity and to bring us into a world where there are no limits.

Just graduated London-based illustrator Jaymie Johnson is a pure example. Her mixed-media drawings are just simply stunning.

I am also loving Kathryn Blackmore's work. Her feminine and flirty linear drawings are somewhat skeletal but fun.

One of my favourites...Mr. Masato Kato.

Kato is an illustrator based in Tokyo, Japan. His work really manages to capture the essence of these historical fashion figures in all their beauty and power with his mighty minimalistic style.

I've also heard that you can get these colourful figures printed out as big as the size of a real human being.

I would love to have some of these in my bedroom! Maybe one day...

I am also fascinated by the Estonian-born illustrator Anu Samarüütel. She makes beautifully big acrylic paintings using bright colours and interesting geometric forms. Her inspiration? 20th century painters such as Picasso.

So simple yet sophisticated.

Then there is the wonderful (and crazy) works of Maggie Piu.

And the fabulously classic drawings of Helen Dryden, too.

I am also interested in Kelly Thompson as an illustrator. Her delicate drawings are just so fanciful and challenging.

I adore her use of nature here.

Nina Chakrabarti studied at Central St. Martins too (yay!). She works using mainly felt tips, pencils, inks and the one and only Apple Macintosh.

I love her enjoyment in using different mediums and technologies. The contrast between her chosen image and her more detailed, black and white pen work is just so striking!

Lastly, there is Yaeko Abe. She is an illustrator from Japan and I just love her simple style. Her work reflects some sort of dark humour as well as beauty, resulting in pieces that are just so minimal yet memorable. Each piece is created using pen, ink, and markers.

How cute are they?

So maybe I am just in an illustrative mood today...but this post is really making me crave a newly white sheet of paper and a perfectly-sharpened HB pencil.

I just can't wait to experiment with all this unusual use of pattern and colour combination that I have just witnessed...

So I am off to draw now, toodles!
