Snails at work

Inspired by Damien Hirst's 'In and Out of Love' (1993) in which living butterflies create art of their own, I decided to experiment with snails and food dye, similarly allowing nature (the snails) to become the artist.

Their creation, to me, seemed to mirror a kind of vein-vine structure or a salty flow of ocean water.

I found it so fascinating. You could see them slowly crawling over the canvas and each other. It was voyeuristic yet extremely peaceful to watch.

The outcome of Mother nature's beautiful patterns:

The snail trails appear to mirror the mapping of invisible information stored within our bodies:

  1. nature is so amazing and never seems to cease to surprise us...who says snails cannot paint? elephant and chimpanzees can...if you are given the tools and the chance...then everything is possible....i see a massive spider..but who knows? could be an octopus...
the maestro up in the skies gave us nature and the rest is up to us human beings....keep on sliding snails...and watch the magic unfold

démarche très intéressante. que vas-tu faire avec l'oeuvre ensuite?

  4. Wow, such a great idea! I love self-made art. Some time ago I came up with an idea of painted hat which creates patterns on clothes when it rains.
